Graduates of the 4th Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology Convocation Ceremony were gathered at The Persada Johor International Convention Centre on the 19th July 2017 to celebrate their success and achievements. Y.B. Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Transport, Malaysia, was the guest of honour and was at hand to present the Academic Excellence Awards to the students.

The 421 students who were conferred their diplomas expressed their excitement and relief as they advance to a different stage of their lives in the maritime family. The event which began at 8.30 am. was a festive affair as it witnessed the graduates of

Diploma in Maritime Transportation Management and Diploma in Shipping Management receiving their diplomas in front of an audience filled with proud family members and friends.

In the same ceremony, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Ir. Khairil Anwar Ahmad, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Education@Iskandar Sdn. Bhd. presented the Industry Awards to Muhammad Jirotullah bin Muhammad Junaidi, Muhammad Muzzafar bin Hariri, Nuratiqah Huda Supandi and Mohd Amir Abd Rahim which were sponsored by Education@ Iskandar Sdn. Bhd. and Mutiara Bina Sdn. Bhd. The receipients of the Aziz Award, ponsored by Dato’ Captain Hj Abdul Rahim

bin Abd Aziz, the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Pengerang Marine Operation, Dialog Pengerang Sdn. Bhd, was awarded to Kevin Timothy Khoo Boon Hau and Helsyneli Fevryhana Afrial. The NMIT Awards were awarded to Akmal Asyraf Muhamad Mahiyudin and Tesalonita Anak Paul. The Yaacob Award, sponsored by Haji Yaacob bin Hj Ali, the founder and chairman of Yayasan Yaacob, was awarded to the best student, Nurul Ain Safwah Ekey Hussain from Diploma in Maritime Transportation Management.

The ceremony was also attended by several esteemed members within the Malaysian maritime community. This showcases NMIT’s dedication towards bridging a strong relationship between the maritime sector and the education sector. Its commitment towards providing the best maritime education has increased in leaps and bounds through the global partnerships that it has achieved while maintaining a strong presence in Malaysia.

NMIT has also celebrated a productive year as it signed Memorandums of Understanding with several international academic institutions namely with the Dutch Offshore Academy, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport as well as the NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences and its latest partner, University Of The Aegean. This demonstrates NMIT’s commitment towards ensuring that its graduates are equipped with abundant opportunities internationally be it through their academic pursuits or their maritime careers.

The maritime sector has been recognised as a key growth pillar for the Malaysian economy. The various initiatives undertaken by the government to develop the nation’s maritime sector has seen the sector grow tremendously over the last few years. Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas continue to rank among the top 20 container ports in the world. With the plan to develop Carey Island Port-Industrial City Project, Malaysia is poised to become a regional maritime centre in the near future.

The future of the maritime industry certainly looks promising. On the global scale, countries worldwide are concentrating on economic developments by focusing on international trade activities. In the next 10 – 15 years, world trade is projected to grow significantly, resulting in a doubling of seaborne trade volumes from 10 billion tonnes of cargo annually today to 20 billion tonnes of cargo around 2030.

The growth and progress in the maritime sector will continue to offer an abundance of exciting career opportunities across various sectors; be it at sea or land. NMIT is proud that its graduates are playing their roles in realizing the maritime dream.
